History
Yurts, or similar structures, come originally from the nomadic peoples of central Asia. Evolving out of their need to up sticks (quite literally) and move their base every few months as they drive their herds on to new pastures, the yurt has become, through centuries of design, an extraordinarily versatile structure. They can handle all weathers, which in central Asia can be incredibly harsh, and yet pack down in only a couple of hours into bundles light enough to be carried by a few horses, camels, yaks or the roof-rack of a Russian built 4x4 land cruiser.
Uses
The versatility of yurts makes them perfect for a variety of outdoor uses, and yurts are becoming a more regular sight at
weddings,
corporate events,
festivals and almost anywhere that you might need a temporary (or sometimes permanent), aesthetically pleasing outdoor shelter.
